COUPLES AND MONEY

There are a variety of issues couples can face regarding money and finances.  Some common problems are:

  • Mate spends too much money–money you don’t have, or should be saving.
  • Mate is too stingy and tight–unable to let loose and have a good time, enjoy life today.
  • Mate doesn’t want to work, or only wants to work part-time–and your family really needs the money.  Too much pressure on you to be sole provider.
  • Mate is a workaholic–too concerned with making more and more money.  Not concerned enough with family responsibilities.  Doesn’t seem concerned with quality time spent with you.
  • Mate is irresponsible–such as, doesn’t pay bills on time, doesn’t have enough money in bank account to pay bills.
  • Arguments or resentment regarding having separate bank accounts, or a joint account.
  • Mate spends too much money on the kids, or stepchildren–you feel that they are being spoiled.
  • You’re both struggling financially, and this is causing great stress on your relationship–or your marriage.  You’re worried about paying bills, and supporting yourselves or your family.
  • The economy has affected you, and you’re not doing as well as you used to.  Your self-esteem has plummeted, you’re embarrassed or ashamed, and it’s affecting your ability to be close to your mate.
  • You can’t make it on your own yet;  you’re not totally self-sufficient. You feel that you cannot really express negative feelings about anything to your partner because you are financially dependent.
  • Your mate is too dependent on you financially, and too lazy.  You are starting to feel taken advantage of, or used.

Especially in today’s economic climate, money issues can becomes extremely problematic.  Studies show that finances are one of the most difficult things to talk about.  Yet, in a safe therapeutic setting, these sensitive issues can be discussed and resolved.  Couples can learn to work with each other in constructive fashion, both emotionally and practically-speaking.
